Shopify vs WooCommerce: which platform is right for your store?

Both platforms can run a profitable Indian e-commerce business. The question is which one fits your budget, your technical comfort level, and your growth plans. Here is an honest breakdown with real rupee numbers.

After building e-commerce stores on both platforms for over 40 Gujarat businesses, we have a clear sense of when each one wins. The right choice depends on your budget, your technical setup, how much control you want, and whether you plan to sell domestically or internationally.

The fundamental difference

Shopify is a fully hosted, subscription-based platform. You pay a monthly fee and Shopify manages the servers, security patches, and infrastructure. Everything happens inside Shopify's dashboard.

WooCommerce is a free WordPress plugin that converts a WordPress website into an e-commerce store. You own your hosting, your server, and your files. More flexibility, more responsibility, typically lower long-term cost.

Neither is better in isolation. A Surat textile retailer launching their first online store with a ₹30,000 budget has different needs than an Ahmedabad electronics business doing ₹50 lakh in monthly online sales. The platform that serves one well may be wrong for the other entirely.

True cost comparison for indian businesses

This is where most comparisons fail. They quote Shopify's headline price without accounting for India-specific costs. Here is a complete picture:

Shopify annual costs (Basic plan):

  • Platform fee: approximately ₹18,000/year (Basic plan billed annually)
  • Transaction fee: 2% per order when not using Shopify Payments (Shopify Payments is not available in India, so this applies to every Indian store)
  • Payment gateway fee: Razorpay charges an additional 2% per transaction
  • Total payment cost per ₹100 sale: approximately ₹4 (Shopify's 2% + Razorpay's 2%)
  • Essential apps: ₹12,000 to ₹36,000/year for email marketing, reviews, loyalty, etc.

WooCommerce annual costs:

  • Plugin: Free
  • Hosting: ₹6,000 to ₹18,000/year (depending on plan and traffic)
  • Domain: ₹800 to ₹1,500/year
  • Transaction fee: Razorpay charges 2% per transaction, no additional platform fee
  • Total payment cost per ₹100 sale: approximately ₹2 (Razorpay only)
  • Premium plugins: ₹5,000 to ₹15,000/year

For a store doing ₹5,00,000 in monthly sales, the 2% difference in transaction fees equals ₹10,000/month saved on WooCommerce. That is ₹1,20,000/year in savings that does not appear in Shopify's pricing page. This is the most important number for high-volume Indian stores.

Ease of use

Shopify wins here, clearly. The admin dashboard is clean and intuitive. Adding products, setting up shipping zones, running discount codes, and reading sales reports all work without any technical knowledge. A business owner in Ahmedabad can learn to manage a Shopify store in a day.

WooCommerce requires WordPress comfort. Basic product management is not complicated, but troubleshooting plugin conflicts, managing hosting renewals, handling WordPress updates, and dealing with server issues requires either technical knowledge or a developer you can call. For business owners who want to manage their store independently without ongoing technical support, Shopify removes friction.

Payment gateways: india-specific reality

WooCommerce supports Razorpay, PayU, CCAvenue, Instamojo, Cashfree, and every major Indian payment gateway as a free or low-cost plugin, with no additional platform transaction fee beyond the gateway's own charges.

Shopify supports Razorpay and a handful of other Indian gateways through third-party apps, but charges its own transaction fee on top of the gateway fee on all plans except Shopify Plus. There is no way to avoid this double fee structure for Indian Shopify stores.

For businesses doing high transaction volumes, this is often the deciding factor. A manufacturer in Rajkot selling to B2B buyers online, processing 200 orders/month at an average ₹8,000 per order, saves ₹32,000/month on WooCommerce versus Shopify Basic on transaction fees alone.

SEO capabilities

WooCommerce (built on WordPress) offers deeper SEO control. With Yoast SEO or Rank Math, you can manage title tags, meta descriptions, schema markup, XML sitemaps, breadcrumbs, and canonical URLs with precision. URL structures are fully customisable.

Shopify has improved significantly but still has limitations. All product URLs must include /products/ and all collection URLs must include /collections/. These cannot be changed. Duplicate content can be an issue (Shopify creates multiple URL paths for the same product when accessed through different collections). These issues are manageable but require deliberate attention.

For businesses where organic search is a primary acquisition channel, WooCommerce's flexibility gives a meaningful long-term advantage.

Design and customisation

Shopify has a curated theme store with over 100 themes. Visual editing is straightforward. For customisation beyond what the theme offers, you need a Shopify developer familiar with Liquid, Shopify's templating language. Good Liquid developers in India are less common than WordPress developers, which can make custom development more expensive or slower.

WooCommerce works with any WordPress theme. The developer talent pool in Ahmedabad and across Gujarat is large for WordPress. Customisation involves standard PHP, HTML, and CSS. For businesses needing a unique product configurator, a custom checkout flow, or complex membership systems, WooCommerce is significantly more practical.

Scalability

Shopify scales automatically. As your traffic grows, Shopify's infrastructure handles it. You do not worry about server capacity during a sale or a spike from an Instagram viral post.

WooCommerce scalability depends on your hosting. Basic shared hosting handles a few hundred visitors per day. For serious e-commerce traffic, you need managed WordPress hosting (Cloudways, Kinsta, or SiteGround) at ₹2,000 to ₹6,000/month. This is manageable and still often cheaper than Shopify's higher plans, but it requires awareness and proactive management.

The decision framework

Choose Shopify if: You want to launch quickly without technical involvement. Your store is straightforward with standard products and standard checkout. You are comfortable with a higher ongoing cost in exchange for operational simplicity. You expect very high traffic and want zero infrastructure worry. You plan to sell internationally alongside India.

Choose WooCommerce if: You want to minimise ongoing platform costs. You have access to a WordPress developer or a web agency that manages it for you. You need deep SEO control. You need custom functionality. You want full ownership and portability of your store data. Your transaction volume makes the 2% platform fee difference meaningful.

For most first-time Ahmedabad and Gujarat business owners building an online store with a setup budget below ₹75,000 and moderate transaction volumes: WooCommerce typically offers better long-term value. For businesses that need to launch in 2 weeks without any technical involvement and are willing to pay more for simplicity: Shopify is the right choice.
